What caused the engine to fail and how much to fix? 200 1988

I just called a woman that has a 1988 DL for sale for $750 OBO. She claims her daughter didn't know there wasn't any water/coolant in the car ran it until it quit running and now it won't run at all. What caused the engine to break (warped head?) and will it be a lot to fix and get it running again?

The car only has about 160,000 miles on it and the owner (2nd owner) has sunk a lot of money into the car such as an all new AC unit ($1500), new tires, and she claims regular service and the body is in great shape. She didn't speak highly of her mechanic however so there could possibly be other problems. She loves the car but claims her husband went out and bought the daughter a new car and they will get rid of the 240. I've been looking for a car for my son and if I can talk her down a few hundred and get it running again it may be a good deal. Thanks in advance!
