Car runs without fuel pump fuse. Why? 200 1989

Did my first fuel filter change today on my sons 89 240. Not a bad job. FAQ mentioned pulling main pump fuse until car dies to empty engine side line. Well, pulled both fuse 4 and 6 (pumps) and car never died after running for a least 5 minutes. However, I pulled wires at fuel pump and then died almost immediately. 3/4 full tank; if that matters.

On my 1982 when the fuse blew it died. What is going on here? Anyone.

Thanks for any response - my curiousity is up.

Gary
