Brake & clutch pedal assembly removal 120-130

OK, my the damn brake pedal on my '65 122S (220) wagon snapped. Grrrr. As if the brakes weren't problematic enough (no servo on mine yet)...

I found a replacement and now I need to get the old one out. As you know, these are mounted on a pivot tube that runs through the ends of both the clutch and brake pedals.

The only way I can see getting this tube out is by grabbing it with Vise Grips or pipe wrench and pushing it sideways while turning it until one end pops free of the firewall mount. I just wanna make sure this is in fact the way to go about it before I damage something.

Thanks in advance.
