no start-no fuel pressure 700

Hi Volvo friends-I need your help! I have a 1991 740 -Regina fuel system with a single fuel pump in the tank.Relays and fuses are okay and I get power to the fuel pump wire (pink) in the trunk, but the pump won't work. I have had the pump out and bench tested it and it seemed to work okay. Put back in, worked okay for a few days, now won't go! I have bypassed relay and understand how it works. It seems to me to be a "flat spot in the fuel pump motor" and when it stops there it won't work.
Question: 1. Has anyone heard of this.
2. Any other possible suggestions
3. Can a inline fuel pump be installed outside the tank and draw through the original pump in the tank.
4. Where is a good source for such a pump?

Thanks a bunch and any help will be appreciated!
Eddie
