Cracked vacuum hoses 200 1987

While I was checking under the hood of my 87 244DL (185k mi), I found one of the hoses leading to the top of the throttle body was brittle and had cracked at the connection. What does this hose do? Have I been letting un-metered, unfiltered air into my engine!?

Also, just wondering if these symptoms would be related to the broken hose:

a) Pinging noise when accelerating
b) Hard starting when engine is warm

Thanks, Brian
