intermittant starter solenoid? 200

We've got an 82 245 with an intermittant no crank condition. Thought I fixed it by replacing the ign. switch, but the old switch subsequently tested good. (Although replacing the (s)witch has chased away the problem twice now...) Today the problem returned. Battery fine, idiot lights come on, fuel pump pressurizes: then no crank, no clicking, nothing. Don't think it's the neutral safety switch: ran through the pattern while holding the key to start with no results. Short out the solenoid with a big screwdriver and the starter would whir without engaging. Three hours later it starts with no problems. Frustrating.
Could this be an intermittant starter solenoid problem? Something else? Anyone...?
