Strange rev related rattle in B23E 200 1983

Hi all,
I don't know if any of you have had this problem before but my B23E 240 has recently developed a tinny rattle. The noise starts at about 4000rpm and stops again at 4500, then continues through the rev range happily, although when changing gears and the revs fall back through that bracket the goes again for a split second. The next incident was just while cruising at 2500rpm in 3rd, it made a sound like stepping on an aluminium drink can. Then the noise stopped. Although the car is no longer making this sound I would still like to know what it could have been because I don't have a clue. It sounded like it might have been coming from the exhaust system. Thank you for your help.
