high revving going into 3rd gear 900 1991

thanks in advance. we have a 1991 940 turbo that has suddenly started revving to around 3000rpms or so before it goes into 3rd. it only does it on that one shift. if you drive it slower on take off it won't do it, but to me thats not normal driving. I like to get up and go. so you have to let off a little so it shifts easier. fluid level is fine and looks good.
any help is greatly appreciated.
