Rear Axel Strapless 444-544

While looking under the back of the car at the rear axel I thought I saw a snakeskin. To my relief it turned out to be the axel support strap. Relief turned to dismay as I realized that it was torn in half. A look at the strap on the other side revealed a second broken strap.

Other than supporting the weight of the axel while the car is airborn, what is the function of the straps?
