Just bought an '84 242T need some advice

Is your car intercooled? If yes, then good, if no, then that's your first job!

Before you even touch the boost level, you need to get a calibrated boost gauge. There are a bunch on the market, any 2 1/16" gauge will do. The VDO Vision series boost gauge is a great match for the other stock gauges. The calibrated gauge will have numbers on it so that you can see exactly how much boost you are making. To turn up the boost, I would highly recommend the G-valve, or Dawes Device, same thing, which you can make yourself for about $5. It provides boost level control, and will make your turbo spool up faster.
