Need help with speedometer. 700

I took the instrument panel from a 90 to go in my 87. The wiring was different , but I think I have it right now. I switched the three prong plug from the 87 for the four prong plug from the 90, an changed the wires accordingly. I intergrated the brown/white wire from the 4 prong connector with #6(brown)on the 12 pin connector(speedometer/fuel ground). That was only thing really different, as far as I can tell, between the two

But it still doesnt work.
Maybe its the sending unit?

Could someone help me to understand this subject a little bettter.

What Am I dealing with here. Whats in the speedo? How does it work? How do I check it out?

Ive done a lot of searching and a lot of reading, but I cant seem to find enough info. Help, If you can.
