REALLY long drives 140-160 1970

Well, I can't quite compare to that long haul, but we did log 4000 miles last year in the '88 740, driving through the Atlantic Provinces... Conn-Mass-NH-Maine-NB-NS-and on to Newfoundland. Although it's a much newer model, the '88 is certainly NOT a new car, and preparation was the key. Brought along spare oil, coolant, ATF, and a gas can (I don't really like to carry fuel in the car).
Did a complete tuneup, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, air filter, cleaned throttle and replaced flame trap. Replaced an unhappy looking radiator hose and had the tires balanced. Carried 1 extra spare tire in addition to the full-size spare I always have. Took my tools and included a few of the old spark plugs, and some fuses, duct tape, a couple bulbs and so on. IF you think it may come in handy, best to bring it. Have a flashlight, bring a good jack along, and a good tire wrench. I keep my breaker bar with 3/4" socket in the trunk. Road flares and/or reflectors, and jumper cables are really handy to have in the emergency kit. We ended up jumpstarting someone else along this drive! But it was good to have these things and keeps the worrying to a minimum.
Our only problem the entire trip was a plug that loosened on the catalytic converter and blew out... we were 50 miles south of Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Fortunately the inventive folks at a Canadian Tire fabricated a plug to replace the lost piece. We completed the rest of the trip without incident- another 2800 miles after that point. (On NF we drove from the ferry dock at Port-aux-Basques to the very northern tip, then down to St. Johns, then back to Port-aux-Basques.)
Highly recommend this drive and we met wonderful people everywhere we went!
