142E Soundproofing results 140-160

Guys,
I posted a request for soundproofing data a few weeks back. Many thanks to all who contributed. Here are the results and what I did and some other assorted ramblings:

I took out the seats and carpet and put a layer of 8-pound carpet padding and covered the entire floor. I ran it up the firewall as far as possible. It was a good time to clean the old stuff anyway.

Then, I went to Home Depot(Lowe's, whatever) and bought a 4 x 8 sheet of 1/2 inch thick foil backed foam insulation. I cut out 2 pieces to exactly match the inside of the bottom of the hood of the 142. I used Mylar(foil) tape and tried to make it as neat as possible. I simply taped these 2 pieces of insulation in between the primary structural members of the hood. It looks ok, and really works good.

Lastly, I have purchased a can of 'undercoating with sound deading'. I have not applied this product, but think that it could not hurt to spray some underneath the tranny tunnel area and lower firewall. Comments?

Next, I need to buy a new shifter boot. Mine is torn and lots of noise comes throught. Has anybody simply bought a universal at the parts store(Hurst brand) and bolted it in? It seems to me that any of them will work ok. I just thought I would seek the advice from you guys.

I still have the factory AM/FM radio in the car with one dash and one rear deck speaker. I took out the rear deck speaker and the paper on the speaker flew away when I blew the dust off of it. I put another 4" round in the place(all I had at the time). Anyway, the radio is too quiet the hear while driving. Is this the same on your cars guys?

Anyway, my car is a HELL of a lot quieter already. I used the cell phone on the interstate today and was able to hear and have a discussion, but the other party KNEW I was not in a new Lexus. I also knew I was not in a Lexus, and am quite pleased with the fact that I was in a brick instead.

Later guys,
