Oil Breather Box Test 200

I've read about using the blow test on the oil breather box. Why must the blowing hose go directly on the box nipple? Why can't I take off the flameguard fitting and stick a small piece of copper tubing into the hose where the flame guard plugs in? Seems to me that it should be able to test both the breather box and the hose that way. What am I missing?
