I posted this in the opinions section as well but I don't know how many people look there. I had never looked there until recently so I figured I would post it here as well.
I recently converted to synthetic oil for my Volvo and Toyota. A mechanic (not an Amsoil dealer) told me that most synthetic oils in the store that say 100% synthetic are not necessarily 100% synthetic (in Canada). He said Amsoil and one other (can't remember the brand) were the only ones that were 100% synthetic. Has anyone ever heard this before? If so what is the other true synthetic? Can different brands of synthetic oil be mixed?
After buying my oil I rode down the street to Lordco (local parts place) and went to buy a filter. When he came out of the back carrying 2 orange Fram boxes (one for each of my cars) all I could think was "Orange kiss of death." A phrase I recalled reading here. So I left without any filters. I called a the Amsoil guy and he had one that fit my Volvo. It cost 3 times as much as the Fram filter but was good for twice as many kilometers and supposedly much better, not just some paper in a can. So I drove the half hour to get the Amsoil filter. Unfortunately he did not have one to fit my Toyota. What other brand of oil filters are good? Is Fram the "Orange kiss of deat" as I recall it being?
