Battery cable replacement tips 700 1988

My '88 Volvo 740 N/A sedan has been having a problem of stalling out or failing to start occasionally because of poor connection between the positive battery terminal and the positive battery cable. The insulation on the cable has become worn, torn, or frayed in several places, so I think it's clearly time to replace it. Going to local chain auto parts stores, like CarQuest and NAPA, the battery cables they sell for my car are not exact matches. They are not quite the exact length of the original, the terminal connectors are not quite the same, and they are generally 4-gauge wires instead of the 2- or 1-gauge that came on the car. Do any of these things make a difference? Am I better off going to the Volvo dealership for the new positive cable? Is there any difference between name-brand battery cables and the cheapo ones? Thanks for the help.
