Central locking relay hot only when doors are locked. 700 1988

Odd. Parked overnight with the doors locked, in the morning the relay is cold. Driving with the doors unlocked, the relay is cold. Driving with the doors locked, the relay is hot as a firecracker.?? It seems power is available regardless of ignition switch position, that's how it locks with the key. So why isn't it hot always?

Anyone else notice this?

Reading the FAQ has me thinking about drilling cooling holes in the relay's case and redirecting the driver's "crotch" A/C vent to the relay tray.
