Advice needed - DIESEL gurus 200 1984

Hello-
I have an '84 264 diesel w/ approx. 105k original. The car runs very well but has recently developed a small coolant leak between the #1 and #2 cylinders at the head gasket. The head gasket also appears to be leaking oil back near the injection pump. As of yet, there is NO mixing of oil and water, and no more smoke than usual out the back (what smoke there is isn't white). My questions are: Since I'm planning on replacing the gasket, 1) Should I specify a certain type or brand of gasket to be used? and 2) Is there anything else I should "take care of" while this repair is being done? and, finally, 3)Is it necessary to get the head machined if the car has never overheated?
Thanks very much for any help, my apologies for the long post-

-Chris in Austin, TX
