Real axle dilemma 700 1988

Hi

I would like to check (or change) my real axle/differential fluid. I have an '88 760GLE with the V6. Yes, it still runs. None of the manuals address a lot of stuff about the V6 GLE's because they assume none are left on the road. Rolling under the car I expected to see the standard fill plug on the housing. Instead I found the gas tank, lots of shielding and the new parking brake cable I put in last week. In the spot normally reserved for the plug I found what appears to be a sending unit. It is on the aft/passenger side of the housing. It is in an almost completly inaccessible location.

Is this a low fluid sending unit?
Is the filler plug behind it?
Is there anything funky about this orphaned differential?

Before I do something stupid please help.

Thanks

Jim A
