Interesting Problem - Need advice 700 1989

Periodically my '89 740 non-turbo rans like crap. The revs jump from 500-900 at idle, there is no power, poor accerleration, an occaissional low level backfire that sounds like a soft pop, and then suddenly it clears and takes off like a rabbit. It seems to happen at various times, but almost always at two-thirds of a tank of fuel. It also happens more often when cold but it can also happen when warmed up. Any thoughts or advice?
