how to keep coolant from spraying everywhere? 700

I plan on replacing my overflow tank and the hoses that attach to it pretty soon. My question... is there any good way to plug up the holes that the hoses attach to and keep the coolant from gushing all over? Would Rags or a golf tee work? Any ideas or imput would be greatly appreciated.
