fuel in oil - damage to engine?? 200 1989

HI all:

Just bought a 89 240 - no start that had been running well until November - longs trips no problem. Then suddenly quit and the owner let it sit. Found oil coming out of the amm and air bellows and spark plugs smelled of fuel. Drained oil and got a gallon and half (maybe a more) of runny oil with fuel mixed into I assume - smells like that. Is definately not coolant. Found several holes in the air intake bellows by the AMM.

The previous owner had let this thing sit for four months and evidently tried to start it repeatedy and it failed to start. Would this account for the fuel mixed in the oil, if he tried to start it several times over the months since November? And does that indicate a faulty fuel presuure regulator. Any damage?? I assume it never ran with this much oil/whatever mixed together. I have the valve cover off and the cam area is very clean - no signs of wear or sludge at 170K.

This is new one on me - never expected to find this! crossing my fingers! HAs this happened before on the brickboard?????
