Had the same prob on my 90 745. The connector for the sending unit on the rear diff was bad. Had to 'rebuild' the connector. $5.00 and a trip to radio shack. I recommend a trip to the car wash to spray off the rear diff. as it will be nasty.
I don't think bentley made a manual for anything volvo. I might be wrong. I have a bentley bmw manual and it is great. The main problem with chilton's is they try to cover such a huge year model spread with a 1" thick book. Haynes is a little better but they don't tell you anything more than how to take it apart and put it together.
