Instrument problems are kind of normal for 740s. Read through the 700FAQ- it's under "FEATURES" above on this page. There's a ton of information from people that have been here, and done this.
For the wiring, I'd suggest the Haynes manual. It covers all the cars up to 1988 very well. After that, they kind of dropped the ball. If it's front fog lights, I'd suggest looking at the point where the wiring enters the housing for a short. Good luck!
