Low frequency 'whir tones'...trans main bearing?..or somthing else...? 140-160 1974

There is a low frequency whir tone that begins at around 2500 rpm but does not seem to get louder when I accelerate. It does become more pronounced as I decelerate however. Its this changing low frequency tone that slows down and changes in pitch as the car slows down. This÷sound seems to be comming from the driveline. It continues even when I put the trans in neutral.

There is plenty of fluid in the trans and the noise is nothing like the loud bearing noises in my old trans.

I looked at my driveline and the ujoint yokes are not lined up the way they should be. Wouldn't an unbalanced driveline cause a loud vibration?

I checked and changed the fluid in the rear end. The noise does not seem to be comming from the rear end.

Its raining out. Sometime when it stops, I am going to put the car up on jackstands, have someone step on the accelerator while I crawl under the car, and try to pinpoint the noise.

I purchased trans seals and gaskets and a pinion bearing from RPR yesterday. Perhaps I should have purchased new trans bearings as well.

I guess I can always have them send the bearings, put a piece of plywood on the kitchen table, and take care of business.

Any educated sugestions?
