Bypassing rheostat module 700 1988

Still trying to determine if this can be done without causing any harm. I was advised by someone who had done this on a 240. I do not know if that unit contained an electronic circuit in both the ground and light circuits or if it was a simple rheostat in series with the instrument light circuit. Any help out there?
