Tailgate wiring harness repair 200 1985

I have used various wire connectors to repair my 850 240 GL wagon tailgate harness until it looks like a Christmas tree at the hinges. Last week I was told that my license plate lights were not working and I therefore did not pass inspection. I've tried once again to connect the appropriate wire but also found that an apparent black grounding wire has broken. Does anyone have experience with replacing the harness? I figure it is time to replace the whole thing if it won't take me a whole weekend to do. I already used a 2x4 to hold up the tailgate while I disconnected the driver's side hinge to inspect the wires. The tailgate tag light sockets don't seem to be in good shape either. I'm hesitating to replace all these things on such an old car when I have found out that the local dealer sells each side harness for $67 and each socket for $38!!!! Any help from your experience would be appreciated.
