'81 244DL feed pump rusted in place 200 1981

My poor car seems to be on it's last legs, but maybe not. My pre-pump is not working. The whole top of the unit is embedded in rust, so badly that when I tried removing the ground connection it broke right off, so there's nowhere to connect it to ground. The pump may be fine for all I know but I can't make a solid connection to clean metal. Wire brushed with all my might and used grit cloth to no avail.

Secondly this rust seems to be preventing me from removing the pump itself, and the screws that hold the gas line cinches. I suppose I could cut an inch or so of the gas lines to remove them and they're probably due for a replacement anyhow. I'm weary of forcing anything or sawing/drilling any parts as they're right at the gas tank.

WD-40 didn't help much. Also lacking appropriate tool to twist the pump loose, and I'm not sure how the electrical plugs should come out - much rust there as well.

Assuming the worst, the pump would need replacement if I could even remove it. The front suspension needs work as well, clutch may be next after that.

I've been offered an '89 Chevy Beretta for $400 - it's in good shape, well cared for and owned by a mechanic. Should I give up on the 240? I like the car a lot but it may be more trouble than it's worth. Dunno. Volvo's registration renewal is due in 10 days, so I should decide soon.

For what it's worth, I'm a double bassist and my instrument fits in the 240 but not the Beretta.

Any suggestions?

Mike
