Harmonic Balancer Squeal 200 1987

After I replaced my timing belt, there was a squeal that I do not think is from any of the belts or pulleys. I assumed it was the harmonic balancer. It has now dissappeared, or at least I can't hear it over the rattle of the catyalic converter.
Question: Will the balancer fail without warning. Also, how do I know if it needs to be replaced?
