760 Fuel Gauge Sender 700

This may sound like how long is piece of string, but how good are the Fuel Senders in these 7 series cars? I have been told the Pre Pumps fail but never the senders I have had trouble of late with the fuel gauge barely registering and have been advised to check out the back of the instrument panel and ensure that all things are tight and crimped I have done this but to no effect I would now assume that the sender is at fault.
Trying to purchase a new one of these in Australia is impossible Would a used one be worth the effort of removing the old one? I will be left stranded one day without fuel because the damn gauge is not working.
