tire pressure 900

I went to have the oil changed this weekend and part of their "full service" was checking the tire pressure. Ever since then the ride on my car has become atrocious. Turns out they pumped my tires up to 40 PSI all around. The sticker on the door frame specifies 30 front, 36 rear. After I brought all the tires back to spec the ride was smooth as silk again.
My question: What pressure do you keep your tires at? I have stock 196/65R15 tires. 36 still seems a little rough in the rear. Can i take it down to 32 or 34 safely? 99% of the time the car is empty so there is no chance of overloading it. I do 90% city driving.
Thanks for everybody's help.
