Worth replacing windsheild myself? 140-160 1971

Guys,
My 71 142 has some rust under the windshield trim. Whenever I wash it at the car wash, flakes come out from under. This is the only rust on the car. I plan to have it painted sometime this summer. Should I pull out the windshield and clear that out? I would bet it has been rusting under there for a while. Can this do serious damage?
My windshield is ok but pitted as hell like most of these older cars. I would consider changing it for a couple hundred bucks.
