tranny end of speedo cable... **picture** 200

I've been working on this transmission leak for about a week now - it's an aw70 transmission - the leak is at the cable-driven speedo connection...

I purchased a new speedo cable - like a bonehead, after trying to connect this cable at the transmission end, I stripped the first few threads on the white plastic female connection on the transmission.

Three questions I could not find the answers to in the Haynes, Chilton, or Bentley:

1. What is the name of this white platic part?

2. Is it safe to remove it from the transmission?

3. How deep should the cable go into the transmission end? (Is it possible that the previous cable broke inside the tranny end, and this is why the cable doesn't seem to go in too deep?)

thanks again for all the help

- Michael
