Manual gearbox and rear axle oil change 700

There have been a few posts regarding manual transmission oil renewal. Up to now I've not changed transmission oil in line with current manufacturer's recommendations (or lack of them). I suppose I've thought that the transmission oil isn't subject to the stresses and heat of the engine oil. My 89 745 GLE has never had gearbox (M46) or rear axle oil changed (at least since 85k and it's now done 176k). Having read the FAQ and various posts I'm now thinking I should change it. What is the general opinion out there?
Also, last time I tried to check the gearbox oil level, the filler bolt was solid, so I left it. Has anyone ever stripped this bolt or known of the casing being damaged? - I'd hate to do that.
