Its possible taking that a tranny shop might be able to adjust something to eek out a few more months of use. But that would probably just be a hefty bill - if I were you I'd just spring for the M41 swap now. You might try pulling the pan yourself and seeing if you can find the adjustments for the clutch bands yourself, and seeing if there is some sort of filter you could clean.

I've never had good luck with auto tranny Volvo's. The two I've had (an 1800E and a 145E) both had the trannies go out within a few months of my ownership. I didn't abuse them, but I do tend to drive with a heavy foot. Both just started slurring shifts, slipping under full throttle in 1st gear. Both got manual tranny swaps, which made them both much better cars.

On the other hand, my Mom's '71 145S wagon made it 250,000 miles on the original tranny, before she traded it in on a Jeep Cherokee. Although the Jeep now has 275,000 miles on it and is still going strong. So I think that has more to say about the gentle way my Mom drives cars.
