If I were in your situation I think I would disconnect the kickdown cable at the throttle spool. The cable should be very free in its housing and slide easily in and out when you pull on it. See if you get normal shifting with it disconnected. With the cable disconnected it should shift very quickly through the gears and into overdrive. If it stays there I would suspect the kickdown cable is either out of adjustment or needs replaced. If they hang up at all they can produce some weird problems in shifting up or down (or in and out of overdrive).
