parking brake, this ever happen to anyone? 700 1990

It appears the parking brake mechanism had entirely slipped off/above the retaining clips. I had noticed this awful screeching noise that sometimes came from the parking brake but did not know what it was until I attempted to remove the rear rotors today to find out what it was.

The right rotor would not come off as the entire brake mechanism was jammed inside. I almost had to remove the right cable and pull off the entire thing together, but luckily, after some banging and hammering away, it let go.

The left one was okay, but I didn't take any chances.

I luckily had a springs and retaining clips handy from a previous purchase. The brake shoes themselves looked okay though luckily although I had a spare set too.

Anyways, has this ever happened to anyone? The old clips didn't appear to be bent that far out of shape, only slightly.

Hope this doesn't happen again, the job was a pain in the rear, having to pull against those strong springs and what not.
