Fuel pump questions, need help? 200 1986

My 86 240 died a couple of miles from my home and I had it towed to my driveway(first time she has failed me in 17 years). I suspected a fuel delivery problem(there was spark to the plugs)so I removed and resoldered the relay and the car started.Several hours had passed between the failure and my removing and resoldering the relay. Both of my fuel pumps are the originals(225k miles). I am concerned that there may be a problem with the main fuel pump being intermittent and perhaps the pump worked after several hours cooling down(today was the first pretty hot day here). Is this possible? Should I replace the pumps as a preventative? The pump is pretty noisy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
