Stalled Hard To Start 140-160 1973

Today again my car ran good when it started up, then mysteriously kinda started choking and died out. It has happen a few times in the past and usually I sit around in it and keep trying until it starts again, it may take up to an hour to get it going again. It can get it to run a little with the starter and the pedal half way or all the way but as soon as I let the key go it cuts right out. Eventually though it will run fine and get me home again. By the way the fuel pump is fine.
