check engine light 200 1990

just bought a '90 240. i've been noticing a really intense exhaust smell coming from the front (i can smell it when i'm driving and when i'm standing still). i didn't notice it during the first few days of driving (before i tried to dry the carpets). then, yesterday i took a short trip to the store, gone about 1 hour, the check engine light was on. later that night drove again, didn't come on.

my windshield is leaking so i've been trying to dry out the carpets by turning the heat on and the a/c on max (a remedy i read about on the brickboard - seems to work pretty well). could this be making the exhaust smell so strong, and maybe making the check engine light come on?

anyone know a good place to get my windshield resealed/ replaced in or around boston, ma.

thanks
adam
