noisy speedometer SOLVED 444-544 1961

Thanks for help. The speedo got progressively worse and started jumping around to random speeds, so I took out the whole instrument cluster and replaced it with another that I had on hand. This one is a bit different and has a trip meter. It also has, in addition to the temp guage cable that goes to the engine, another fixed cable with a threaded rod that was not on the original '61 model. What is this? The cable is short (about 5") and got quite hot when I turned on ignition. Seeing smoke, I turned it off and I think it might have shorted with something on ignition switch. Any ideas about this?
