grill painting/how 200

I might of made a mistake painting my grill. The grill is chrome i taped the boarder and angeled bar that holds the call out i painted the slats with flat black plasti-coat engine paint as im in fl and the sun. The problem is i did not sand the chrome down in fear that i would de-shape the slats as the chrome is rather strong on this plastic. It looks good no drips lots of thin coats but im afraid that after a few days it will start scratching and all.I should of asked how. so here it is. How would the right way of been as i have 2 more to mess up and a few front light trims these parts i want black. Thanks for any replys!
