Re: Bilstein strut cartridges 200

This has all been covered before but I'm not finding the info I want in the archives. I'm preparing to install Bilstein HD inserts in the struts on my '80 240 DL (back suspension and shocks have been renewed just prior to this writing). Basically, I have two questions.

1- Can I safely use a pipe wrench to remove the cartridge retaining nut (the one that keeps the cartridge in the tube)?

2- What's the deal with the spacer at the bottom of the tube?

As for question #1, I'm sure I have read that this is okay, probably in this very forum but I want to check and make sure it won't tear anything up.

As for #2, Do some inserts require a spacer and others not? Do different brands of inserts use different spacers?

That's what is on my mind at this moment.
