DID I FIND MY PROBLEM??? ALL EXPERTS PLEASE REPLY! 200 1987

Earlier I posted a problem of my 87 240 boging down and sometimes stalling. I found the fuel sender unit through the access panel in the trunk. The hoses and the ground and relay all seem fine. I did however find the return line, metal little pipe, was very corroded and was spitting fuel. I wire brushed it downand found a pin hole opening. I went out and got some gas tank patch kit and patched the hole. Of course only to find that there were cracks around the base plate where the pipe meets the plate. We did some soldering and patching but it seems to be too far gone to bring back. I have ordered a new sending unit. Is this even my problem? What should I be checking as I wait the arrival of the new part? Any help would be great. I guess the best thing about this car is the fact that everytime something breaks I learn how to fix it! Thanks.......mike
