Installing my new head unit in my 84' 240 200

i have just bought a kenwood kdc-5020 head unit and a pair of kenwood kfc-6907 6x9's to install in my '84 240. I was wondering how the hell do i go about starting to remove the stock radio and installing the new one. Should i get a professional to do it? The installation manual says i need to remove the negative plug from the battery? is that necassary to not fry the head unit? also ive removed the front panel of the car (e.g the part that covers the radio, air con etc.) and it was hard to do but now i cant get it back on over the stock radio. will it go back on once i install the new head unit?
any help will be useful. as you can tell i know nothing about cars.
ps does anyone know how to open the hood of the car to access the engine. I cant find a hood release catch anywhere?
