Won't jump start, but will roll start 200 1980

So, my friend left the lights on his '80 242 on. We tried to jump it, let it charge for a few minutes, and got nothing. The solenoid didn't even click. The car did roll start just fine and this morning it started normally. He says that this has happened before. For the past 6 years, if the battery runs down it won't jump but will roll start. Once the battery gets charged everything acts as normal. Any ideas what would cause this? Seems strange to me.
