Transmission replacement 200 1983

Two years ago, I bought a used manual transmission (private sale - $100) for my 1983 240DL Sedan. Since I am able to pay for it to be installed so I can have a working overdrive unit, I've had the 175 lb. thing shipped (another $150 spent) to the West Coast, where I now live, and have been told by my mechanic that it's the wrong one...it's only for the 1976-1978 series. Doh!

I know I've lost $250 I can't get back. I also don't desparately need a new transmission installed (I only wanted to have working overdrive - and only a replacement tranny would do the trick). Here are my questions:

1. Does my mechanic's assessment sound accurate to any of you? Did they make different trannys every few years? I just don't know who to believe.

2. Do I have any leg to stand on by asking for some sort of trade from my Volvo shop? Is my tranny (now worthless to me) potentially worth something to them? Like in the form of an hour or two of future labor, or help in finding another used tranny? Or should I expect to totally lose this piece, or worse, be charged for disposing of it?
