240 '87 Strange AT problem 200

My '87 244GL (Auto w/OD) is having problems with the auto trans. The selector does not seem to be synchronized with the transmission any longer. When in reverse, the shift lever vibrates loudly in the housing (seems like it's coming from the driveshaft) and the actualy lever is somewhere between 'R' and 'N'. Drive works (mostly), but is now closer to '2' than to 'D', and so on.

Any ideas?

TIA,
-eric
