I finally did the driver's seat yesterday. I have since winter had a perfect set of seat + backrest foam and covers from the passenger seat of a junked car. I simply followed the step-by-step instructions by Tony Hoffman (uploaded on my web site) and did not run into any difficulties. I tried to do everything by the book: Cut up a pair of old jeans for reinforcements, fixed them with 3M #77 glue, and added a piece of carpet between foam and grid. Cut some vinyl off the worn-out cover for a patch behind the hole for the lumbar adjustment knob. Replaced the broken heat elements. I think that the reason the cover was worn on my low-miler was that the foam sheet covering the heat elements had worked itself towards the back, with no other padding than the cover itself as the result.
Anyway, the result looks and feels great! It is like the seat is brand new. No wear marks at all, the owner of the donor used extra covers. I also had the covers machine washed, so now I also have to wash the until-now nice looking passenger seat... I highly recommend anyone with a sad seat to do this. It is not particularly difficult, and the foam and cover from a passenger seat will fit perfectly. The only exception is the hole for the lumbar knob.
Finally, my question: Now I need to wash the the headrest pad covers. Do I just yank the pads off the headrests, or is there a trick to this? Mine seemed to be stuck and I'd hate to break anything out of ignorance.
