Volvo 240DL Steering Vagueness/Front End Issues

, I recently purchased an older Volvo 240DL (1985) with high mileage
(210,000). The engine seems fine, doesn't burn oil, had recent new
front tires, a battery, and was a California car for the first 14
years of its life, so no rust. It starts fine, accelerates fine,
etc., and there are no strange noises emanating from anywhere. The
brakes also seem good. I noticed, however, when driving it today at
slightly higher speeds (50 mph) that there seems to be a vagueness in
the steering, or greater steering wheel play, or a "wandering" feeling
in the front end. It seems to track ok, and doesn't pull to either
side, but feels imprecise. Any sense of what this might be? Is it
worth getting looked at? Unsafe? I'd hate putting much $ into this
car, at this point in its life, other than oil change expenses, repair
of inoperative parts, etc. thanks!!
